New Work: OOPARTS / Out-of-Place Artifacts2025.10.10 News

A new work made by knitting glass is now on display at TOKYO MIDTOWN DESIGN LIVE 2025 in Tokyo Midtown.

To be precise, this piece was created by knitting glass fiber using a three-dimensional knitting technique called WHOLEGARMENT®, which requires neither cutting nor sewing, and then firing it in an electric kiln. While most glass fibers are used for industrial purposes, and WHOLEGARMENT® technology has been cultivated mainly within the fashion industry, both the material and the technique themselves are, in essence, transparent and open-ended—holding limitless potential. This work explores one such potential, attempting to reveal it through a freer, more intuitive approach to design.

The title of the work is “OOPARTS / Out-of-Place Artifacts.”
In archaeology, objects that seem inconsistent with the manufacturing techniques of the time or place where they were discovered are called “OOPARTS,” an abbreviation of out-of-place artifacts. In the same way, creating “out-of-place” artifacts—objects that deviate from the “most common” ways of making and thinking—may allow us to rediscover design as an act that unsettles society and opens possibilities beyond its existing frameworks.

We would be delighted if you could view TAKT PROJECT's latest work at the TOKYO MIDTOWN DESIGN LIVE event in Tokyo Midtown.

WHOLEGARMENT® is a registered trademark of SHIMA SEIKI MFG., LTD., a leading manufacturer of computerized knitting machines.
